In today's digital landscape, granting third-party applications access to your device's camera, microphone, or GPS location raises significant concerns regarding privacy and security. Once such permissions are granted, these applications have the potential to operate unnoticed in the background.

The recent privacy enhancements in iOS 14, which include real-time indicators whenever the camera or microphone is engaged, have sparked user interest. Android users are also eagerly anticipating similar features in Android 12.

To address this growing need for transparency on Android devices, Access Dots has been developed, providing support from Android 8.0 onwards. This application mimics the iOS 14 notification system by displaying subtle dots in the top right corner of the screen whenever a third-party app accesses the camera, microphone, or GPS location. Crucially, these indicators remain visible even on the lock screen.

Configuration of Access Dots is straightforward. Users simply need to enable the application's Accessibility Service through a user-friendly toggle within the app's settings. By default, the indicators are color-coded: green denotes camera access, orange indicates microphone use, and blue represents GPS location tracking. Importantly, Access Dots does not require permissions to access the camera or microphone; however, it necessitates GPS location permission to monitor GPS activity by other applications.

Currently in early beta development, Access Dots includes several features:

  • Displays indicators whenever a third-party application engages the device’s camera, microphone, or GPS location.
  • Maintains an access log accessible through the app's main settings. This log records when access occurs, which application was in the foreground at that moment, and the duration of that access.
  • Allows users to customize the colors of the access dots.
  • On devices running Android 10 and above, indicators can be conveniently positioned next to the camera cutout; users can even specify exact X/Y coordinates for placement.
  • If compatible with 'Energy Ring - Universal Edition,' users can further integrate Access Dots around the punch hole camera.
  • The size of the access dots is adjustable based on user preference.

While changing the color of the access dots is free of charge, users are encouraged to consider making a donation to support ongoing development. Donations may also grant access to additional configuration options such as resizing and repositioning dots on the screen.

Please note: It is advisable to whitelist this app under any optimization settings your device may employ. If Access Dots is terminated in the background by system processes, a device restart may be necessary to reactivate functionality.

Accessibility Service Requirement

Access Dots operates as an Accessibility Service to exhibit indicators whenever third-party applications utilize the camera, microphone, or GPS location. The service itself does not collect any personal data.

This application explicitly lacks permission to directly use your device’s camera or microphone.
